Swindon came into this fixture off the back of a poor showing on Tuesday night against Gillingham and dropping down to fourth in the league. Notts County on the other hand are dangling precariously just outside the relegation zone although came into the game having won on Tuesday away against Colchester - their first win since early February.
Swindon started sluggishly and if it wasn't for Wes Foderingham in the Swindon goal they would have been behind, the Swindon keeper making several smart stops in the early exchanges. From there until half time it was Swindon who came forward and were pressing the issue as County defended valiantly to keep it level. The moment of controversy came after twenty-eight minutes as Andy Williams went down slightly easily for the liking of the Notts County player who lingered and was said to have punched the Swindon striker right in front of the linesman, who gave nothing and after the melee that ensued Swindon's Jordan Turnbull and Notts County's Paddy McCourt where both shown yellow cards. The rest of the first half was full of small fouls and free-kicks as both sides struggled to break the other down.
Swindon came out for the second half with renewed vigour and looked ever closer to the break through, which came after fifty-one minutes. Ben Gladwin gave the ball to John Swift who came inside and curled the ball deliciously into the far corner of the net beyond Roy Carroll in the Notts County goal.
From there Notts County collapsed and Swindon out on the accelerator. Andy Williams ran into the box and the ball was flicked away from him before he could shoot and an adjudged obstruction from the Notts County defender gave Swindon the penalty. Williams wandered up to the ball confidently and dispatched the ball into the bottom corner sending Carroll the wrong way for two-nil. Swindon kept going and Notts County lost all composure. First Roy Carroll was booked for dissent off of a Swindon goal-kick. Then Liam Noble was booked for complaining to the ref, kept on complaining and was then shown a second booking for the same offence a matter of seconds later. Swindon wrapped up all three points in the eighty-ninth minute when Massimo Luongo's shot was saved but the rebound came straight to on-loan full-back Harry Toffolo who put into an empty net for his first goal for Swindon. Swindon then with rekindled swagger claimed all three points promoting them to third place in the table after MK Dons were beaten by second place Preston. For Notts County it's back down to nineteenth in League 1.
Notts County boss Shaun Derry was frustrated with the goals conceded especially the penalty stating, 'I've watched the second goal back four or five times. It is 100% not a penalty.' He was also critical of Liam Noble, 'I can't stand here and back Liam Noble, he's got himself sent off for thethird time this season.' 'He needs to look at himself very deeply and come out with a solution.'
Overall a successful day for Swindon but yet more doom and gloom for Notts County.
