After the disappointment of losing to Sheffield United and top spot last week, Swindon were looking to get a win and catch up on the top two who were playing each other. Barnsley on the other hand were having to settle for mid table mediocrity.
With Massimo Luongo and Yasser Kasim back from the Asian cup, things were looking up for Swindon who switched to one upfront to pack the midfield to counter the defensive set up of away teams at the counter attack. The game started and again Swindon looked to dominate possession.
A small smattering of corners and chances evenly shared between the two teams before the fourteenth minute, where the corner went short to John Swift who got round the back of the Barnsley defence and played the ball back across through a thicket of players to Raphael Rossi Branco who smashed the ball home for one-nil to Swindon.
From that point onwards and until half-time, Swindon ramped up the pressure on Barnsley who were pinned back and the home side could have had more if their shooting boots were on. The golden opportunity to kill the game off early came when John Swift was brought down in the box midway through the first half. Up stepped Andy Williams, who stuttered his run up and saw his weak penalty saved by Turnbull in the Barnsley goal.
Cooper's men came out for the second half trying to continue the onslaught of the first half, though it didn't go all their way as Barnsley came out with a greater attacking mentality.
Andy Williams went through on the keeper but again shot wide and was soon taken off for Michael Smith. In the last twenty minutes the chances started to fall on the Swindon goal as constant defensive errors went unpunished, the prime opportunity came from a corner where a fine Foderingham save bounced back for a free header which went wide.
The tides changed after Massimo Luongo weaved his way from the by-line to the edge of the box where he teed up substitute Ben Gladwin who hit his shot with incredible power past
Turnbull, stinging his gloves, and squirming home to confirm the win for Swindon. From then on it was damage limitation for Barnsley who sat back and watched Swindon pass through the midfield.
Mark Cooper seemed pleased with the performance stating, 'I thought we were very good. I thought we totally dominated the football.' Though critical of finishing, 'The game should have been over a lot sooner than it was but we understand you can miss chances, you can miss penalties.' Danny Wilson was suitably frustrated with his sides defence of the short corner that led to the first goal, 'We didn't pick the man that went out for the short corner.' But praised his teams commitment, 'But as the game went along we started to make it difficult for them.'
Though not the best performance from Swindon they will be pleased to regain an automatic promotion spot from MK Dons after their nil-nil draw with top of the table Bristol City
